Automated Plant-Care:
This is my automated plant-care system for figs. It controls an LED light and a water pump for small fig trees. The first model was implemented using a PLC but a micro-controller would be more cost effective. It is important to know how much power your pump needs and use appropriate relays where necessary.
My skills and experience:
I started working with my dad while I was still in school. I did concrete flatwork throughout high school and college. I was especially good at finishing. I started studying Electrical and Computer Engineering at Calvin College. During this time I took many classes in math, physics, computer science, and other liberal arts classes that gave me a well-rounded education.
I had an internship at an R&D lab of an appliance manufacturer in West Michigan. During this internship I recorded data from an embedded system that controlled gas flow inside the appliance. I analyzed data on perfomance according to efficiency and safety factors.
Circuit Design and Analysis
I have experience designing, analyzing, and populating complex circuits. My experience is mainly in server computer boards, but I also have experience with audio and power delivery boards. I used primarily LTSPICE and PSPICE for designing the circuits, and EagleCAD for designing the boards in university. During my Senior Design project at university I designed a small UAV capable of delivering a small payload, GPS tracking, and remote control.
Production Process and Communication
During my professional career I’ve had several positions where I am responsible for working with a team in a production setting. I am experienced working with outside teams to determine requirements, and collaborating to meet requirements. I have experience in testing designs, recording changes to a design, and writing documentation. I’m also experienced in sourcing, budgeting, and other important skills in the design process.
PLCs and Machine Design
I have 3~5 years of experience with PLCs and machine design. I believe there are many similarities between PLC machines and Embedded. Both of these have I/O, power, and environmental requirements. In most cases production and efficiency can be measured and optimized. I also measured audible vibrations in conveyors for Quality Assurance.
VHDL and FPGA
During my time as a student at Calvin University I’ve used VHDL for several projects. I have experience programming FPGAs to control different devices, read input etc. I’ve also seen and used FPGAs on server boards during my IT career. I’m familiar with FPGAs used in cryptomining, however I’ve never used them for that purpose.
Assembly and C
I’ve used both C and Assembly for low-level programming. We are using C and Assembly in my capstone project for flight control of a small drone. I’ve also used these languages in Computer Science for OS/kernel level programs such as memory controllers, networking, and embedded systems.
Networking and Communications
I’ve gained knowledge about IP and how it is used in communication networks in my Operating Systems and Networking class at Calvin University. I have real life experience using API servers to send jobs to clients, monitor remote locations/systems, and record data.
